Kristen Stewart’s new film On The Road is to have its UK premiere opening the Film4 Summer Screen at Somerset House 2012.

The Twilight actress stars in the highly-anticipated big screen adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s classic novel from Brazilian director Walter Salles, which will launch the new season of the open air cinema on Thursday August 16.

Ben Stiller’s new comedy The Watch, co-starring Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill and Richard Ayoade, will also premiere as part of the Summer Screen on Sunday August 19, ahead of its release on August 29.

The comedy sees a group of suburban fathers form a Neighbourhood Watch scheme with a difference to protect their families.

The open-air film season at London’s Somerset House will close on Monday August 27, with the UK premiere of Lawless, John Hillcoat’s new film about prohibition bootlegging, starring Tom Hardy, Guy Pearce, Shia LaBeouf, Gary Oldman, Jessica Chastain and Mia Wasikowska.

Other films to be shown as part of the event include the first showing of the new digitally restored version of Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds, with an introduction from glamorous Hitchcock blonde Tippi Hedren.

There will also be a double billing of Ray Winstone’s Sexy Beast and Ryan Gosling’s Drive, Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now and Steven Spielberg’s Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom.

Roger Corman will receive the 2012 Filmmaker on the Edge Award and will take part in an on-stage conversation with John Waters at the Provincetown International Film festival in Massachusetts.

Parker Posey will receive the Excellence In Acting Award while the Faith Hubley Career Achievement Award will go to director Kirby Dick.

The East Coast premiere of Leslye Headland’s comedy Bachelorette starring Kirsten Dunst, Isla Fisher and Lizzy Caplan and Tom O’Brien’s Fairhaven bookend the festival, which closes on Jun 17.

The Friday Spotlight Film is Gayby directed by Jonathan Lisecki and the Saturday Spotlight Selection is Jeffrey Schwarz’ Vito.

IFC Films and Sundance Selects to Distribute On the Road

AMC Networks has just announced the acquisition of all US rights to acclaimed filmmaker Walter Salles’ On the Road, to be released jointly by the company’s film distribution labels IFC Films and Sundance Selects.

Based on the iconic novel by Jack Kerouac, the film stars Garrett Hedlund, Sam Riley, Kristen Stewart and Kirsten Dunst and features performances by Amy Adams, Tom Sturridge, Danny Morgan, Alice Braga, Elisabeth Moss and Viggo Mortensen. The screenplay is by Jose Rivera (Academy Award nominee for The Motorcycle Diaries).

The World Premiere for On the Road is set for the upcoming Cannes Film Festival in the Competition Section. A major theatrical release is planned for late fall.

On the Road tells the provocative story of Sal Paradise (Sam Riley), a young writer whose life is shaken and ultimately redefined by the arrival of Dean Moriarty (Garrett Hedlund), a free-spirited, fearless, fast talking Westerner, and his girl, Marylou (Kristen Stewart). Together, Sal and Dean travel cross-country in a quest for freedom from the conformity and conservatism engulfing them, in search of the unknown, themselves, and the pursuit of “it” — the pure essence of experience.

Seeking unchartered terrain and the last American frontier, the duo encounter an eclectic mix of men and women — Bull (Viggo Mortensen), Camille (Kirsten Dunst), Carlo (Tom Sturridge), Jane (Amy Adams), Terry (Alice Braga), and Galatéa (Elisabeth Moss) – each adding meaning to their desire for a new way of life.
